Kashmir, known to many in India as "heaven on earth" or simply India's paradise, is certainly among the most beautiful places you can visit in India, and in the world in general. It is a mountainous country in the Himalayas with breathtaking views of endless green valleys between the mountains, turquoise lakes sparkling and sparkling in the sun, snowy peaks, mountains, dense forests, wild horses running around in the open spaces and more. It is a landscape that cannot be described in words.

Key goals

A little history and information that is important to know

The Kashmir region is a disputed region in northern India located on the border between India and Pakistan, and formerly belonged to it. As part of the 1947 partition of India, the region officially belongs to India, but since this declaration there have been several unsuccessful attempts to conquer the region by Pakistan, so there is a large and noticeable Indian military presence there, which creates hostility from the predominantly Muslim local population, making the region contentious and complex.

Kashmir borders the provinces of Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab.

The full name of the state of Kashmir is actually Jammu and Kashmir, and it has two regions – the region of Jammu, which is a large and bustling Indian city with particularly severe air pollution, humidity and heat, the second region is the region of the Kashmir region. In the Kashmir region there is the capital city of Srinagar, where there is a pastoral lake called Dal Lake where houseboats are anchored. There are also beautiful valleys such as the amazing Aru Valley with small villages, treks to lakes and glaciers. The distance between Jammu and Srinagar is about 6 hours and may take longer (depending on traffic jams and police checkpoints).

Previously, Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh were a single territorial union state in India, with its own autonomous government and constitution, until in 2019 it was decided to separate the country into two – the state of Jammu and Kashmir, and the state of Ladakh, and their autonomous status was revoked. It is important to know that the local SIM that works throughout India is not valid for these areas and a special SIM must be purchased.

Kashmir travel warning!!

More than twenty years ago, the Israeli Foreign Ministry included Kashmir in the list of areas where there is a travel warning for Israeli travelers due to the tensions in the area and the fact that the population is Muslim. This fact has existed since then and is important to know and take into account and make the appropriate considerations. It should be noted that despite this warning, many travelers still choose to come and travel to this beautiful and special place.

How to get to Kashmir?

Kashmir is a remote and isolated northwestern state in India, and it will usually be long and cumbersome to reach by land, but it is possible, you just need to be patient.

Domestic flight – This is the most convenient and fastest way to reach remote Kashmir, especially for those not coming from destinations in neighboring states – Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. There are airports in both Jammu and Srinagar, the largest cities in the region.

Train – Both Jammu and Srinagar have a train station, but direct trains from large northern cities such as Delhi, Amritsar, and Chandigarh will only reach Jammu, and from there you have to change trains to Srinagar or take a taxi.

Buses and semi-sleepers – Like the train, buses from central locations (Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, etc.) will usually only go as far as Jammu, and from there you will have to take another bus or taxi to Srinagar. There is a direct bus between Leh (Ladakh) and Srinagar.

Taxis – Taxis, jeeps, and group vans are the most common option for travelers who don't want to bother with the long journey but want to save on airfare. Travelers often hire vans from destinations like Dharamshala, which is the closest destination to Kashmir in Himachal Pradesh, Manali or Parvati, in Ladakh.

When to travel to Kashmir?

Kashmir's season is long and incredibly comfortable, and lasts throughout the summer months. Kashmir is relatively high and therefore very cold in winter there. The season begins around April when summer approaches and temperatures rise, and ends around October when winter begins and temperatures drop. Rains are expected during the monsoon months (June-September) but Kashmir is not one of the hardest hit by the monsoon season, compared to Himachal Pradesh for example.
